Free BalletMet performance and WaterFire on the Riverfront

Kick off Labor Day weekend with a unique experience set against the downtown skyline as BalletMet Columbus takes the stage and WaterFire Columbus illuminates the Riverfront Amphitheater in Genoa Park, on Friday, Sept. 3. BalletMet’s performance is a co-production of BalletMet and Music in the Air, a program of the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, in partnership with WaterFire Columbus. Admission is free. WaterFire burn will begin at 7:30 pm with the BalletMet performance at 8 pm. Food and beverages will be available for purchase beginning at 6:30 pm.

BalletMet’s program will feature excerpts from the company’s upcoming season including its season opening production of Requiem!! as well as audience favorites from last season and works performed during BalletMet’s successful summer tour to Russia. During the evening, WaterFire will light up the riverfront. The incredible vista of dozens of blazing fires burning just above the surface of the Scioto River make WaterFire a one-of-a-kind experience. Fire tenders manage the flames from torch-lit boats, providing bold silhouettes that move slowly between the fires.

“BalletMet’s performance on the riverfront is a great night out for the whole family,” said BalletMet Artistic Director Gerard Charles. “The audience can enjoy the splendor of WaterFire and some of Columbus’ best dance, all set against a beautiful cityscape.”

“The Recreation and Parks Department is pleased to continue this partnership with BalletMet and WaterFire, especially during our department’s 100th anniversary year,” said Karen Wiser, Director of Music in the Air. “This annual free performance of BalletMet on the riverfront is a great gift to the community, offering a fabulous evening of dance surrounded by the flickering flames of WaterFire.”

Breen Center for the Performing Arts, St. Ignatius High School
October 1 & 2, 2010. Two works anchor the fall programming at this venue in Ohio City. In conjunction with internationally renowned choreographer Diane Gray, Verb Ballets will offer the World Premiere performance of the Cleveland Flats Symphony, composed by Cleveland composer Richard Rinehart.
Rinehart crafted his Cleveland Flats Symphony as a tribute to his hometown. The symphony starts where the Cuyahoga River meets Lake Erie and transverses up through the various sections of the Cleveland Flats to the industrial steel-making district. The piece then performs an abrupt turn and travels ever more quickly back to Lake Erie, where the journey began. The other anchor work on the program is Myth and the Madness of Edgar Allen Poe, an abstract re-telling of the life of Edgar Allen Poe in a company premiere by choreographer Christopher Fleming. This look at Poe’s decent into madness is a contemporary ballet perfect for the dancers of Verb Ballets. Tickets: 216.961.2560, or ignatius.edu/breencenter

Everybody Dance, Now!!

October 1, 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of the Dancing Wheels Company, this significant milestone would serve as the catalyst for a nationwide inclusive dance day in which a public display of dance that includes dancers with and without disabilities takes place. The event in each city could be carved out individually, in other words, some could hold a "dancing in the streets" event at a public plaza much like the "flash mob" dances going on or others could do a class that is in a mall or another public place.

These events would all happen on October 1, during 11:00 & 1:00 in your local time zone and video taped. Our station manager at WKYC T.V 3, an NBC affiliate has agreed to accept the videos from each participating company and get them to the national news network, along with some interviews from some of the companies. The story would make a greater impact because it shows a concerted effort throughout the nation. In addition, I would be happy to provide a basic press release that each Company can add to with their own details regarding their company, this could be sent out in each city to bring additional local attention. Each company can also use social media to further the information and encourage participation.

In Cleveland, we are working with our Convention & Visitor's bureau and city officials to make this event possible. It seems to have triggered a great deal of interest so if you are interested in participating, please let me know and I will work closely with you to insure that this will be a great event!

les ballets C de la B: Out of Context-for Pina
Friday, October 8 | 8 pm
Thurber Theatre at Drake Center, 1849 Cannon Dr.
$24 general public, $20 members, $10 students
This season's dance program launches with another U.S. premiere from this outstanding company from Ghent, Belgium, making its third visit to Columbus. Out of Context-for Pina, the latest work by C de la B's Alain Platel, is dedicated to trailblazing dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch.
Nine exquisitely skilled dancers stalk a raw stage to the sound of Glenn Gould's landmark interpretations of Bach's Goldberg Variations, along with music by Ravel as well as R&B hits. Pianist Glenn Gould was famed for the catalogue of eccentricities and tics that underscored his genius, and serves as a touchstone for the "penetrating portrait of the human condition" that the dancers create, according to a review in Belgian newspaper De Morgan. http://www.lesballetscdela.be/en/

Hubbard Street is consistently called one of the best modern dance repertory companies in America. They have it all: virtuosity, athleticism, artistry and sophisticated works by some of the best choreographers past and present. In Cleveland, the company will dance Deep Down Dos, a breathless new ballet praised as "another winner" for the gifted choreographer Allejandro Cerrudo, plus Walking Mad to Ravel's Bolero, that critics call "screwball fun requiring split-second timing".

Faye Driscoll: 837 Venice Boulevard
Thursday-Saturday, November 18-20 | 8 PM
Wexner Center Performance Space
$18 general public, $15 members, $10 students
Recommended for mature audiences
The New York Times picked this breakthrough piece by choreographer Faye Driscoll as one of the top five dance events of the year in 2008. New York-based Driscoll has collaborated with theater artists like Young Jean Lee and Cynthia Hopkins while also establishing herself with original works that meld dance-theater and edgy performance art. Using intentionally outrageous dialogue and off-kilter movement, Driscoll's trio of dancers reveals how friends might be a force to help you soar one moment, and then just jerk you around. As the New York Times' reviewer put it: "Driscoll makes movement the vehicle of meaning, the repository of the inexpressible emotions that seethe beneath our surfaces. Identity may be at issue in 837 Venice Blvd, but Ms. Driscoll's is clear: she is an artist." This show marks Driscoll's Columbus debut. fayedriscoll.com http://www.fayedriscoll.com/
